FAQ

  • Do you ship lighting to the US?

Unfortunately we do not ship our lighting to the United States. Why you might ask? Well, as much as we’d love to have our lamps in the US, our lighting is made to comply with UK standards & regulations and has fittings suitable only for the UK.

However, we do ship internationally when it comes to our stained glass window panels, terrariums and any other non-electrical items.

  • HOW DO I CARE FOR MY LAMP?

At Moton we believe you can and should enjoy your lamp for life!

Mass produced products & throw away culture is our arch nemesis and we can't stand the thought that our handcrafted lamps could one day end up in landfill. How sad!

So, when we create our lamps, they are made with materials which can be upkept by some pretty straight forward steps.

Our lamp bases are made from hardwood and treated with natural tree oils for a rich lustre which is also kind to the environment. We never use varnish!

Due to oil being a non-permanent finish, the lustre can fade with time and use of the lamp. How to fix?

Reoil your lamp annually to maintain it’s intended look. We recommend using Tung Oil. Dab on to a clean rag and massage in to the wood in the direction of the grain... ET VOILA!

  • What type of bulb should I use?

Time for a quick lesson on lumens!

Traditionally, the brightness of light bulbs were described by it’s wattage, not it's lumens. Meaning that most of us look for a high wattage bulb if we want a bright light.

What you should know is that lumens dictate the brightness of a bulb, not the wattage. Nowadays you can buy a 60Watt bulb which is brighter than a 100Watt bulb. So, if you would like a brighter effect than the 15Watt bulb which we provide as standard with every lamp sold, simply look for a 15Watt bulb with higher lumens.

All of our lamps use 15Watt Pygmy bulbs for a warm glow, perfect for mood lighting.

  • Why use a lower wattage bulb?

Firstly, it's important to use the correct wattage to stop the lamp overheating. Using a higher wattage than recommended could cause the stained glass to crack or even melt the fittings inside the lamp.

Secondly, the beautiful warm glow that stained glass lamps are known and loved for could be washed out and exchanged for glare if you use a bulb which is super bright.

Both of these things should be avoided and it’s probably worth mentioning here that we cannot refund or exchange lamps which have been damaged due to the use of a higher wattage bulb than recommended. Sorry!

  • How are the lamps made?

All items are handmade in our studio by stained glass artist Molly Gangel + woodworker Malcolm Dickson.

The stained glass shades are made using the traditional Tiffany copper foil technique. a centuries old process that takes an endless amount of patience and skill.

The wooden lamp bases are skilfully handcrafted in small batches.

The process starts by selecting the timber in person at our local timber merchant. We use a selection of hardwoods and these will change depending on availability.

Each piece of wood is cut using Japanese hand tools, then shaped and finished by hand.

All fittings are then added by Malcolm who is a registered PAT Tester in order to comply with UK law.

  • How are the lamps packaged?

We take every precaution to keep the lamps safe when in transit. You'll be happy to know we've never had a lamp go missing in the mail or be damaged in transit.

All our packaging is plastic free + fully recyclable.

We use paper bubble wrap to protect the glass.

We use biodegradable packing peanuts to keep the lamp from moving around when in transit.

All items are sent Royal Mail tracked & recorded delivery, guaranteed by 1pm next day and covered up to £500.

~ Free UK Shipping + Gift Wrap on all items! ~

All items come in sturdy double corrugated cardboard boxes, safely sealed with our Moton Studio branded gum tape.

Once your order is dispatched, we'll email your tracking reference to you so you can impatiently watch as it comes your way!

  • Can I recycle your packaging?

Every single part of our packaging can be recycled, including our tape.

We have went to this effort in order to have as little impact on the planet as possible, so, we ask that you do your bit and recycle it all at your end.

Boxes, papers & tape go in your cardboard recycling bin.

Packing peanuts can be placed in your shower/bath. Turn on the water and watch as they dissolve and disappear before your eyes. Say goodbye to fighting the packing peanuts in to the bin and finding a few rogues in all manner of places weeks after you opened the box. We’ve all been there!
